Hunting Dahu by Max Barnewitz

Hunting Dahu is a single-page comic consisting of a 2 x 3 grid of squares superimposed over a photo of a mountaintop. The comic uses watercolor and ink to show a person with short hair, a green sweater, and blue striped mittens snowshoeing through the alps looking for a creature called the Dahu.

Panel 1: A person bends to affix snowshoes on their feet. Text reads “The Dahu is a mythological animal.”

Panel 2: The person hikes along, a strange goat-like animal peaks at them from behind a tree, sniffing. Text continues: “It is known throughout the Alps.”

Panel 3: As the person continues to hike, back to the reader, two more creatures appear, looking curiously at each other as they follow the snowshoer. The text continues “Related to Chamois, it is characterized by its asymmetrical legs - which facilitate climbing.”

Panel 4: The snowshoer has stopped and is looking through binoculars across the snowy mountain terrain. Behind them are two Dahu, one is holding binoculars too. The narration continues: “Like snipe hunts or wild goose chases, hunting dahu is considered a fool’s errand.”

Panel 5: Again with their back to the reader, the snow shower descends the mountain. Two dahu in the foreground watch them go. The text reads: “Maybe.”

Panel 6: In the last panel, 3 dahu descend the mountain, too, all three wearing snowshoes on their hoofs. The text states: “Maybe not.”
